What is Electromagnetism? A Basic Definition
Electro-magnetism \E*lec`tro-mag"net*ism\ n.
1.
magnetism produced by an electric current.

2. one of the fundamental forces of nature,
responsible for
both electrical and magnetic
phenomena. Called also the
electromagnetic
force. Formerly believed to be separate
phenomena, electricity and magnetism were shown by
experiment and theory to be different aspects of the
electromagnetic force. It is responsible for the
forces
generated between magnetically or electrically
charged
objects, and is the fundamental force
responsible for the
characteristics of
electromagnetic radiation, including
light.
[PJC]
3. the branch of physics concerned with
electromagnetic
phenomena.

- [0812.4785] Can Maxwell's equations be obtained from the continuity equation?: We formulate an existence theorem that states that given localized scalar and vector time-dependent sources satisfying the continuity equation, there exist two retarded fields that satisfy a set of four field equations. If the theorem is applied to the usual electromagneti c charge and current densities, the retarded fields are identified with the electric and magnetic fields and the associated field equations with Maxwell's equations. This application of the theorem suggests that charge conservation can be considered to be the fundamental assumption underlying Maxwell's equations.

- Hermann von Helmholtz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz (August 31, 1821?September 8, 1894) was a German physician and physicist who made significant contributions to several widely varied areas of modern science. In physiology and physiological psychology, he is known for his mathematics of the eye, theories of vision, ideas on the visual perception of space, color vision research, and on the sensation of tone, perception of sound, and empiricism. In physics, he is known for his theories on the conservation of energy, work in electrodynamic s, chemical thermodynamics , and on a mechanical foundation of thermodynamics . As a philosopher, he is known for his philosophy of science, ideas on the relation between the laws of perception and the laws of nature, the science of aesthetics, and ideas on the civilizing power of science. A large German association of research institutions, the Helmholtz Association, is named after him.[1]
